“Medical school is not for me”
October 16, 2021
“I give up! Medical school is not for me”.
There are many students who find a perfect balance in their new life in medical schools. However, there are many who are not. Medical school is competitive and everyone is trying hard to do their best in their academic so that they can pursue their dream residency. It is often easier to get burned out than you think if you do not take care of things in a timely manner and most importantly have a system in place. Four years is a long journey if you are not in a proper mindset. There are often students who work hard in the beginning and get burned out quickly because they do not see the light at the end of the tunnel in this long journey. Four years of college followed by another four years of medical schools and then the residency of 3-7 years. I have personally encountered many students get burned out and even get into depression because they could not master the system that works for them. Residency season is one such stressful time that you want to keep it under control.
It does not matter how smart you are it is important to have these system checked off every now and then if you want to avoid such pitfall. Here are few ways.
1. Take it one step at a time
Break up large tasks into small ones. Try different time management methods that work for you.
2. Care for yourself
Have a walk outside your house, smell the flowers. Get daily exercise, eat well, spend time in nature, get enough sleep and avoid alcohol and drugs. Using alcohol and drugs is a poor way to cope with stress and may contribute to the development of depression.
3. Seek Support
Spend time with supportive family members and friends or seek out student support groups.
4. Have Fun
Try out something new, change your routine. Join different activities online that can divert your attention for a while. Do things you enjoy
